Wandering from the commissary/trading post, I headed down toward the waterfront. This was a pretty popular place, given that temperatures were usually in the 90's with a heat index around 100, if not higher.

Topping the hill and walking down, it was much the same. The lifeguard tower was just as I had remember, as well as the pier. There was one change, which the older gentleman had told me about.
This. Seriously? What the hell is this doing at my summer camp? Is this an amusement park now or what? I was not the least bit happy to see this. But wait, it gets worse.
You go down the slide, and you end up in this. Yes. This. You don't slide out into the lake; you slide into this trough/flume-type thing. Could it possibly be any worse? Fortunately, this would prove to be the most disappointing part of the trip.
The pier is shaped like this for a reason (or, at least, it was 25 years ago). The bottom left section is for beginners; to the right is for the "intermediate group," and the swimmers were above the pier with the diving platform. You didn't jump into the beginner's area, not even feet-first; you might shatter your femur if you landed firmly. You didn't dive into the intermediate area, at least not head-first. It was only about four feet deep.
On a separate note, do not ask me how I knew those depths.
To be continued ...
On the slide, assuming the water is cleaned out when the kids are there, I wonder if there have been any head injuries from hitting the padded wall. Regardless, I wanna do it.
ReplyDeleteCoffeypot, that was one thing I was wondering. I really can't figure out why it doesn't just end in the lake.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it doesn't end in the lake so that all the campers can use it regardless of swim skill level?
ReplyDeleteTravis, I thought about that, but as I recall, you had to have basic swim skills to even go near the water. It could end in three feet or so.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just me. Like I said, I don't like the thing being there at all.
Where is this? It looks pretty awesome! :)
